35 Years - part 2

After a short stop in Page.....near Lake Powell, we drove and drove and drove.  To pass the time, Bob thought it would be a good idea to teach me all about accounting.  He kept giving me examples of debits and credits until I thought my brain was going to explode.  I was so happy when we finally got to St. George!  It was so good to see our darling family!  Unfortunately Bobby was away on an archeological site working for a several days, so we didn't get to see him.  We were glad that Elizabeth and little Robert were still up.   Elizabeth wanted to know if we could do Valentines.....so we did!  Little Robert was so excited about his card.  I finally remembered that my phone could video him, so I didn't capture the first moment of opening his card, but it was pretty cute.

Saturday morning we got ready and then headed out for the day.  The kids were cute playing with the soccer ball and feeding the chickens.

Holly wanted to go to New Harmony since she had never been there.  We checked Bob's book and found that there were several ghost towns in the area.  We went first to Fort Harmony to see the ruins there.  Harmony was named after Harmony, Pennsylvania.  The fort was made out of adobe bricks with all of the homes built inside.  One wall of each home was a part of the fort wall.  It was referred by Brigham Young as the best fort in Utah.  Then a couple months after Brigham visited, it began to rain.  It rained for something like 44 days.  The adobe bricks literally disinigrated and the families had to leave.  John D. Lee's family (he is the one who was a part of the Mountain Meadow massacre) remained for a while longer.  Sister Lee was packing her family up to leave when at that exact moment a huge wind came up and knocked over a wall killing two of their children and barely missing two others.  It was a sad story.  The families left and half of them relocated 5 miles west.....New Harmony (vs. the old Harmony) and the other half went east and north to found Kanarraville.

We drove through New Harmony and we all felt like it was a little on the creepy feeling side.  We didn't know why....it just felt that way.  We then drove over to Kanarraville and it felt much nicer.  Apparently there are some waterfalls somewhere near there that people like to climb to.  The drawback is that there is no parking anywhere on any streets there.  If you want to park and climb, then you have to go to a certain parking lot and pay $10.00, otherwise your car will be booted!  We were amazed that they could get away with that!  That is more expensive than California parking!

After leaving Kanarraville, we drove to Silver Reef Ghost Town.  This is the only place where silver was ever found in sandstone.  Elizabeth loved hanging out near all the ruins.  She and little Robert had fun checking out all the old artifacts there.  Bob & Holly went on a tour at the Wells Fargo museum while Elizabeth, Robert & I had fun outside.

We enjoyed eating our lunch there and then decided to go to Red Rock Recreation area to hike.  When we got there, it was so crowded we couldn't find a place to park, so we went home.  Elizabeth was so sad. She had really wanted to go hiking, but Little Robert needed a nap (so did Grandma & Grandpa).  When we got up from our naps, Bob, Elizabeth and Blondie went on a hike up the butte behind the house.  When they got home, we went to the Outback for dinner to celebrate our anniversary and because Elizabeth needed a Spotted Dog ice cream dessert.  What a fun time we had!  Once we were home, we watched "A Dolphin Tale" and "Monte Carlo" to top off the day!

Sunday morning we got up, got ready and went to church.  We were so sad to leave our sweet little family, but we needed to head home due to the storm that was brewing.  (Remember....we were in the Corolla!)

It snowed most of the way home, but we made it just fine!  John, Angelica & Vaughn came up and Grandma Nash made soup for all of us.  It was a perfect way to end a perfect anniversary!  I am looking forward to the next 35 years!
